Andy Roberts: The Lore and Legend of the Berwyn Mountain UFO Crash

In the early evening of 23rd January 1974 villagers in the Bala area of north Wales, and beyond, were alarmed by lights flying overhead and a huge explosion. The lights and sound were heard as far away as Liverpool and Birmingham. Believing an aeroplane had crashed, a local nurse drove up the mountain road into the heart of the Berwyn Mountains, to be confronted by a large glowing orb surrounded by what looked to be torch and vehicle lights. Emergency services were mobilised, but nothing was found. 

That night, and during the next few days mountain rescue teams, police, the army and scores of locals scoured the mountainside and several strangers arrived in the area, knocking on doors and asking what people had seen and heard.

Over the past 50 years these mysterious events have become known as ‘The Berwyn Mountain UFO Crash’ and is a contender for the title…
